6 Positive Career Related Songs: Some Associated Careers Lessons

I wrote blog last week about negative lessons from popular songs. Here is a follow-up about positive lessons. It might be fair to say that the negative one was easier to find material for as you will see bellow…

A Hard Days Night – The Beatles

Sample lyrics:

“You know I work all day to get you money to buy you things

And it’s worth it just to hear you say you’re going to give me everything

So why on earth should I moan, cos when I get you alone

You know I feel OK”

Career Lesson: Work may suck but it allows you to do other stuff, like stuff that keeps someone else happy who loves you, which is nice, even though work isn’t…

Vincent – Don Mclean

Sample lyrics:

“Shadows on the hills

Sketch the trees and the daffodils

Catch the breeze and the winter chills

In colors on the snowy linen land

 Now I understand

What you tried to say to me

And how you suffered for your sanity

And how you tried to set them free

They would not listen, they did not know how

Perhaps they’ll listen now”

Career Lesson: Creative work allows you to connect with other people and make a difference to them. Even though you may never know about it and will feel miss-understood and rejected.

Why Don’t You Get A Job? – The Offspring

Sample lyrics:

“She sits on her ass

He works his hands to the bone

To give her money every payday

But she wants more dinero just to stay at home

Well my friend

You gotta say

 I won’t pay, I won’t pay ya, no way

na-na, Why don’t you get a job?

Say no way, say no way ya, no way

na-na, why don’t you get a job?”

Career Lesson: Think our protagonists girl has spent too much time listening to “A Hard Days Night”. Get a job because work is better than loafing of someone else, compelling and motivating hey?

Don’t You Want Me – The Human League

Sample lyrics:

“I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar

That much is true

But even then I knew I’d find a much better place

Either with or without you

The five years we have had have been such good at times

I still love you

But now I think it’s time I lived my life on my own

I guess it’s just what I must do”

Career Lesson: Work allows you to rise from nothing to fame and fortune, in a new romantic pop song. Though you may have to put up wth some creepy types along the way.

Pablo Picasso – Modern Lovers

Sample lyrics:

“Well some people try to pick up girls

And get called ******

This never happened to Pablo Picasso

He could walk down your street

And girls could not resist his stare and

So Pablo Picasso was never called an ******”

Career Lesson: Get a job, get noticed, get a girl. Not at all ethically difficult, but still you get the girl right…

Art Teacher – Rufus Wainwright

Sample lyrics:

“All this having been said,

I married an executive company head

All this having been done, a Turner – I own one

Here I am in this uniformish, pant-suit sort of thing,

Thinking of the art teacher

I was just a girl then;

Never have I loved since then

No, never have I loved any other man”

Career Lesson: Jobs allow you to connect and influence others and make a difference, other jobs suck and involve wearing a suite, choose wisely!
